5 Strategies to Help Your Students ‘Get It’

The parent sat across the table from me and told me that I wasn’t a good teacher because her student hadn’t learned anything this year. If only she knew how hard I had tried to reach her son. Despite my best efforts, I couldn’t get through to him and he fell further and further behind.

Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon scene. There are students in classrooms around the world who, despite their teachers’ best efforts, are not showing growth.

I used to get so frustrated at these students; and they would get frustrated with me. How could they possibly not get what I had shown them over and over again? And worse, how could they say I wasn’t teaching them!?!

Then I learned some strategies that helped me reach these students.

I realized that though I had been trying very hard to teach them, there were some things I wasn’t doing effectively – and that wasn’t helping the situation. Students who are struggling have some very specific needs, and sometimes we loose sight of that as we attempt to teach quality lessons to a room full of students.

What follows is a training that I do with teachers to help them reach those students. Simple strategies, that are easy to implement, but can have a profound impact on your students who just don’t get it. You can get through to these hard to reach students by simply focusing on a few best practices that you are probably already doing to a degree, but need to make sure and focus on it consistently so that these students are no longer left behind.

As you do, they will gain confidence in their skills and desire to continue being successful. They will also have increased sentiments towards you and their education, so they will behave better and stay engaged in the class activities. And they will show true, meaningful growth!
