Resources for the First Day of School for Math Teachers

The first day of school is supposed to be an enjoyable experience for you and for the students.

But part of all of the excitement is your commitment to having a fantastic year.

One way to ensure that this year will be enjoyable and an edifying experience for your new class(es) is to start the year right. Set the tone that your classroom is safe, positive, and academically enriching.

I recommend you spend some time getting to know your students, teaching routines, and doing something academic.

The Four 4’s Challenge

Magic Square

Students are given a 3 by 3 square, and must put one number in each square, using every number one through nine only once. All rows and columns must have the same sum when you add the three numbers.

For a more advanced version, make the two diagonals also have the same sum as the three columns and three rows.
